When we were physicians in training we were told that our financial and professional journey was all about delayed gratification. But now, perhaps decades later, money stills feels stressful and our work-life balance feels off.
Most of us (I know I did) started out with a hefty medical school debt and a decade (or more) of zero to minimal income during medical school and residency. While we struggled financially during those early years, our friends were out earning income and already saving for retirement.
As soon as we finished our training, there were lenders ready to give us credit cards and mortgages because they knew we were a great credit risk. With our first “real” job, we racked up the credit card debt, bought homes and spent money on ourselves and our family because we were doctors and that’s what society expected of us.
Perhaps we felt like we deserved it too. We did, right?
Sure, we look financially successful to those looking in, but deep down many of us are filled with fears and worry about money. Years later the debt still haunts us and we aren’t sure if we will have enough money to retire. Medicine has changed, and we may feel like that initial investment of time and money wasn’t worth it. Perhaps we are now struggling to find our purpose. Or maybe we are just plain burnt-out and need a break.
As a physician myself, I understand the language and the culture of medicine. I know what it’s like to sacrifice time, money and finances (hey—I’m still bitter about missing that Simon and Garfunkel concert in Central Park during my training—-I had to listen to it from within patient rooms at the hospital). I understand the financial, emotional and physical cost of being a physician and a leader in our world today, and I have seen too many physicians struggle which is why I feel so passionate about what I do as a coach.
My mission is to help physicians like yourself create a future and live a life that feels authentic, gratifying and happy—both professionally and personally. Together we can establish the work and family life balance you desire, create a healthier work environment at your office, and reduce stress with time and money.
