While I typically look to the future and try to live in the present, I find that occasionally there is real value in looking backwards. As the year winds down to a close, it is a wonderful opportunity to look back and see how far you’ve come. How far back you look is up to you. You could reflect on the past 12 months, a particular life-phase or do a total life reflection. There are no rules—you get decide your end of the year reflection. Make it a good one.
Looking backwards allows you to be your best cheerleader. Notice the challenges and obstacles you have successfully navigated. If you believe you fell short, it’s ok—notice the lesson, learn from the experience, and consciously choose to do something different in the future. Champion yourself—-you are truly amazing. You know that, right? Acknowledge all the lessons you have already learned. Praise all your success stories. At the end of the day, there are no mistakes…only opportunities. You’re always growing and evolving, and that is what this journey is about. (Hint: Try to look back without judgement—remember, this is the time to observe yourself as your biggest fan not your biggest critic.)
My personal choice of reflection this season…
The year began in my new apartment with a handful of items from my old house and my past—all functional, but remnants of another life. It’s taken the year to let go of more furniture and decorate my apartment in a way that reflects who I am today—every room is now beautiful and feels like home. My bedroom redo happened last, within the past couple months. One day I woke up, looked around, and knew it was time. It was time to start fresh for the new year. I’m aware that it took me so long to get to my own room, but I’m also proud of myself for seeing the lack of authenticity in my pre-redo bedroom and for having the courage to make the changes. My physical belongs have caught up with my internal essence. My emotional and spiritual transformations of many years can now be seen and felt in all of my home. Truthfully, it took me many years to get here—but I made it. Way to go, ME! Yay, Heather! (Insert favorite cheer here.)
To me, this year was one big preparation for the next chapter of my life. In the final weeks I’ll be making one more change (keeping that to myself, for now).
And then…
I’ll step onto my launching pad.
And in 2023, I’ll launch myself into my next great adventure.
Make time for your own personal reflection now. Don’t hold back. You will be amazed at how much you can impress yourself (and don’t forget to cheer)! If there is a story you would like to share with me, I would be honored to listen.
Wishing you a healthy, joyous and peaceful holiday season. May you have the courage to create your next chapter.
Always with love,
Heather
